Sleep Learning - Are Subliminals Effective During Sleep?

Dr Dän Lee Dimke.

Once a listener of a subliminal recording falls asleep, we technically move out the traditional "subliminal" area and enter the area of "sleep learning". Most of the research we have available comes from the Russian studies, in which up to 10,000 volunteers were participating in sleep-learning and sleep suggestion research simultaneously. The predominant result of this study was that sleeping subjects are not very effective learners. But, attitude modification, the kind of thing we are most often trying to accomplish with subliminal recordings, was somewhat effective with a relatively small number of subjects.

Sleep LearningThere are two significant psychological roadblocks to effective results, when a sleeping subject is involved. First, is the "arousal barrier". Nearly 90% of all subjects are awakened by the sound of the recording itself. A fairly large number of people never get over this, and eventually stop trying to use the recordings when the annoyance of being awakened every night finally becomes more than they can tolerate.

The second, more subtle, barrier is known as the "original barrier". This barrier involves the idea that the mind finds data input while sleeping to be new and unsettling. Approximately half of those who finally overcome the "arousal barrier" will still demonstrate no response to the sleep recordings because the mind apparently chooses to simply reject all data input during sleep. In other words, half of all remaining subjects never get past the "original barrier". Interestingly, these same unresponsive subjects, whose minds filter out all data stimuli while sleeping, appear to be unable to filter out subliminal messages in a waking state. This is why subliminal recordings are recommended for use while driving, studying, or other times when the mind is awake and perhaps absorbed in something else.

A few people do appear to be able to learn to respond to subliminal recordings while asleep - that relatively small percentage who are able to overcome the arousal and the original barriers. But, you may discover that otherwise busy times of the day, when you happen to be in one place for a period of time (such as your desk, or your car, etc.) may be the most effective time to use subliminals. The mind's preoccupation with other tasks does not seem to preclude successful subliminal results to nearly the extent that sleep does.
